New Delhi: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MPs on Monday staged protests in the Lok Sabha, along with Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MPs, when the Government tabled the Polavaram Ordinance in the House. The Ordinance was promulgated last month by the Modi Government, transferring 7 Mandals in Khammam district in Telangana to Andhra Pradesh.

As soon as Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Santosh Gangwar tabled the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2014, the TRS and BJD MPs were on their feet, protesting. The TRS MPs carried placards, saying Save Tribals and Scrap Polavaram Ordinance.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan admonished the TRS and BJD MPs, asking them not to shout slogans in the House. She said the MPs should go back to their seats. The Speaker advised them that the best course open to them was to voice their objections when the Government comes forward to replace the Ordinance with a Bill in the House.

Sumitra Mahajan said, “Please go to your seats. This is not fair. This is not the time. When the Ordinance will come up for discussion, you can raise the issue.

You know the procedure and when the Bill is brought forward, at that time I will allow full discussion, but not in this way.”

The TRS MPs did not relent and continued with their protest, despite the Speaker disapproving of their conduct and asking them to take up the issue when the Bill to replace the Ordinance is brought up for consideration. In the din, BJD leader Bhartruhari Mahtab sought to raise a point of order, but nothing was audible. The Speaker adjourned the House for the day after the laying of papers, including the President’s Address to the joint sitting of Parliament.

It was only over the weekend that Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the TRS will protest when the Ordinance was tabled in the Lok Sabha, because the nation should know the objections of the TRS over the issue of Polavaram Project.

The Chief Minister had urged Prime Minister Modi to convene a meeting of the four Chief Ministers of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha, in a bid to evolve a consensus on the issue.
