C RamachandraiahNew Delhi: The Leader of Opposition in Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council, C Ramachandraiah, has told the Antony Committee that the Congress has the potential to bounce back in Andhra Pradesh, where the party drew a blank in the last elections.

In his interaction with Antony Committee on Wednesday set up to probe the causes of the electoral debacle of the party, Ramachandraiah said there were clearly identifiable causes for the defeat of the Congress. For instance, the Congress lost out on the perception battle. The YSRCP and the TDP, which supported the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, succeeded in painting the Congress as the villain of the piece.

The Congress, he said, failed to project that all the political parties had decided on the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and that it was the last party to fall in line. Besides, the Congress failed to showcase the special package for Andhra Pradesh it managed to get from the previous Congress-led UPA government.

Being in office for 10 years, both in the State and at the Centre had taken its toll. The Congress organisational machinery was neglected, he said.
Former Union Minister T Subbirami Reddy said the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh was not the issue but the manner in which it was done became the issue. The BJP, which supported bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, managed to win a few seats in the State. So, he argued, people’s anger was not so much against the division but the manner in which it was done, which had done in the party.

Former Union HRD Minister M M Pallam Raju said he discussed the party revival in Andhra Pradesh, where a wave of unprecedented anger led to the rout of the party.
The party had seen several ups and downs and the latest reverses would not affect the moral of the Congress, he said.
