New Delhi: Urban population in the undivided Andhra Pradesh has increased by 6.10 per cent, which is next only to Kerala, where it increased by 21.70 per cent. Urbanisation has increased rapidly in the Southern States, as against the national average of 3.30 per cent, from 27.80 per cent of the total population in 2001 to 31.10 per cent in 2011, according to Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu.

During the Question Hour, Venkaiah Naidu said, in the other Southern States, the average is higher than the national average. In Karnataka it increased by 4.70 per cent and in Tamil Nadu, it increased by 4.40 per cent.

The increase in respect of Union Territories has been – Daman & Diu (39.00 pc), Lakshadweep (33.60 pc), Dadra and Nagar-Haveli (23.80 pc), Chandigarh (7.50 pc), Delhi (4.30 pc), Andaman & Nicobar Islands (5.10 pc) and Puducherry (1.70 pc).

Four Southern States, six Union Territories, besides the States of Gujarat, Goa, Haryana, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura have led this growth in urbanisation.

Details of urbanisation in the country during the period showed that other States, too, have exceeded national average in urbanisation included: Goa (22.40 pc), Sikkim (14.10 pc), Nagaland (10.70 pc), Haryana (6.0 pc), Gujarat (5.20 pc), Uttarakhand (4.50 pc), West Bengal (3.90 pc) and Punjab (3.60 pc).

Major States falling below the national average in urban growth included: HP (only 0.20 pc), UP (0.50 pc), Bihar (0.80 pc), Assam (1.20 pc), Rajasthan (1.50 pc), Odisha (1.70 pc), Jharkhand (1.80 pc) and Maharashtra (2.80 pc).

Venkaiah Naidu informed the Lok Sabha that Delhi was sanctioned 23 infrastructure projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission at a total cost of Rs 6,649.55 crore, out of which Central assistance has been Rs 2,327.34 crore.

The per capita water supply in urban areas is 69.20 litres per day, as against the bench mark of 135 litres. He also said that the average coverage of water supply connections is 50.20 per cent, as against the bench mark of 100 per cent.
