Murali Mohan MagantiNew Delhi: A sexist remark by Telugu Desam Party MP Murali Mohan Maganti triggered a huge storm kicked up a storm in Lok Sabha on Thursday. During a discussion on atrocities against women, the Rajahmundry MP said that women should dress up in a dignified manner. "...to uphold the tradition of our Indian culture, I would earnestly appeal to all my sisters, daughters and girls to dress dignifiedly," Mohan said.

Murali Mohan explained his point at length, as other Members watched him in a shocked silence. The actor-turned-politician and newly-elected MP also added that the women also should uphold the Indian culture.

Taking strong exception to his remarks, several women members including Supriya Sule (NCP) and Kumari Sushmita Dev (Congress) demanded that the remarks be expunged. "He (Mohan) should be asked to leave the House...It (remarks) should be expunged," demanded Dev. Hukum Singh, who was in the chair, tried to pacify the agitated members saying, "I will look into it. It is a very serious matter. I entirely agree with you...It should not have happened...just hold on. The Chair will take the decision".Such comments encourage culprits of rape, rather than advising women they should advise men: Shobha Oza on Murli Mohan's comment.

All India Women Congress (AIWC) president Shobha Oza said that comments like these only encourage culprits of rape, rather than advising women they should advise men.

It seems that the MPs are doing their best to antagonise the public with sexist, chauvinistic attitudes on issues of crime against women, and Maganti's name is the latest one to be added in the long list of politicians who have made sexist remarks when it comes to discussion on rape issues.

Commenting the reaction of women members to his dress comments, Mohan later told reporters that he would not mind withdrawing his statement if it had disturbed them. "If they feel it is bad, then I don't mind withdrawing (my statement). It they are disturbed by the statement...I will apologise", he said.
