Hyderabad: The location of the new capital city seems to be snowballing into a major controversy. The opposition and the ruling TDP are set to clash on the floor of the House on Thursday if the government announces the location of the capital city in the house.

The YSRCP feels that the government was behaving in dictatorial manner on the issue. The party says that the new capital city should be located in an area where at least 50,000 acres of land was available. While agreeing that it should be centrally located, they are opposing the Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Mangalagiri stretch.

Keeping in view the manner in which the YSRCP had created ruckus in the house demanding that the issue of capital city be first discussed in the Assembly before the government makes a statement, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu held a three hour long meeting with senior ministers and reviewed the situation. Though originally the government thought of making a brief statement on the problems that had arisen on account of bifurcation of the state and lay the Sivaramakrishnan Committee report on the table of the house and leave the floor open for discussion, has now decided that Naidu will make the announcement on the location of the new capital on Thursday at 12.15 pm.

According to a senior minister Naidu held detailed consultation with MLAs and ministers from all the regions and has made it clear that during his speech in the Assembly, he would announce special packages and various schemes for development for each region.

He is also likely to announce constitution of special development boards for the backward regions in the state.

According to a minister Naidu felt that there was no point in delaying the announcement as any further delay could give rise to agitations and backlash in other regions and could cause serious trouble for the government.

It may be mentioned here that Rayalaseema region is already simmering with protests and a day-long bandh was observed in Kurnool on Wednesday demanding that Kurnool should be made the capital. Similarly, advocates in Anantapur held protests demanding that the High Court be located in that district.
