Politicians in Andhra Pradesh are facing an uncomfortable situation in the new capital area, viz. in finding a house for themselves. As the city has been named the de-facto capital, several politicians have decided to move to the city. While the government will build houses for ministers, MLAs, MLCs and officials, other politicians will have to make their own arrangements to reside in the capital until then. But the owners, due to various apprehensions, are refusing to rent their houses or flats.
It was APCC president N Raghuveera Reddy, who first decided to shift to the city. He was followed by former APCC chief Botcha Satyanarayana. The YSR Congress president and opposition leader YS Jaganmohan Reddy too instructed his partymen to find a house for him. So was the case with Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
Raghuveera Reddy and Jaganmohan Reddy wanted to have their houses in Mogalrajapuram or Pinnamaneni Polyclinic area in the heart of the city. Botcha, Chandrababu Naidu and others wanted to have their houses in Bharathinagar or Currency Nagar which provides easy access to the Gannavaram Airport.
Interestingly, local Congress leaders found a suitable independent house for Botcha and paid an advance to the house owner a month ago. But soon, the house owner returned the advance saying that he wouldn’t rent his house to politicians. When the Congress leaders tried to take a flat in an apartment, the residents raised objections and that option also failed. Till date, most leaders, including Raghuveera Reddy and Jaganmohan Reddy couldn’t find a house for rent.
“The house owners have apprehensions that politicians would not vacate the houses or pay rent regularly. We can’t insist on it,” a house owner said.
“Even in apartments, the existing residents oppose leasing out a flat for politicians as the presence of a politician in the apartment would disturb the atmosphere with more visitors,” he added.
As residents have these apprehensions over leasing out their independent houses and even flats, the politicians are finding it difficult to secure a house. Irked at the rejection, Botcha Satyanarayana had told his party men to find an apartment constructed under Public Private Partnership (PPP) by the Municipal Corporation at Brundavan Colony in Labbipet area. The Congress leaders are now trying to book three to four flats in this apartment and move to the city.
Meanwhile, having faced similar rejection by the owners, the Chief Minister is learned to have taken a two-acre vacant land near Kanuru for 33 years on lease and is constructing his camp office there.
The only politician who is placed comfortably in the city is minister for irrigation Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, who lives in Gollapudi village on the outskirts. Other ministers like Dr Kamineni Srinivasa Rao and Pydikondala Manikyala Rao have tried to find houses for themselves in the city to no avail.
