Vykuntapuram is a sleepy village which, in the past few days, become the focal point for all discussions. If sources are to be believed, the State government has decided to locate the capital around this place.

Unconfirmed reports say that astrologers and Vastu experts have advised Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to relocate to this village as it is from here that a small stream of the river Krishna flows towards the north. It is believed that water flowing towards the north is auspicious and will ring in better prospects.

River Krishna, before flowing into the sea at Hamsaladeevi in Krishna district, momentarily changes direction at Vykuntapuram and flows as ‘Uttara Vahini’ (i.e., flowing in a northerly direction). The river is split due to the presence of a massive hill that houses a Lord Venkateswara temple atop.

Most rivers in the country flow from north to south or west to east with an exception of the river Ganga flowing on the north side of Banaras or Kashi. It is on these lines that an argument has been built up to equate Krishna to Ganga and consider Vykuntapuram as Kashi of the south. It is for this reason the capital which was initially proposed around Nuzvid, Agiripalli and Nandigama, had moved to Amaravathi, Thullur and Mangalagiri region.

Though Vykuntapuram is believed to be the central point for the capital, the village has not been officially proposed by the government. In fact, 17 other villages were identified by the State Capital Advisory Committee under the Thulluru and Mangalagiri mandals.

It is said that Vykuntapuram along with other villages in Amaravathi would be named in the second phase. It is also believed that the Chief Minister’s Camp Office would come up at this village.
