New Delhi: Did Telugu Desam Party leadership attempt to betray 'coalition dharma' in Andhra Pradesh yet again? Going by the politics behind setting up the National Institute of Technology (NIT) at Tadepalligudem in West Godavari district the answer is “yes.” It may be recalled that the Centre had planned to establish the NIT post-bifurcation of the State at Tadepalligudem.

This followed several representations from the Endowments Minister of the State, Manikyala Rao, who belongs to the BJP, over a period to locate the same at TP Gudem. He repeatedly met the Union Minister for HRD, Smriti Irani, and the Union Urban Affairs, Minister, M Venkaiah Naidu, in this regard. On June 3, the HRD Ministry announced that the NIT would be set up at TP Gudem as planned and also announced an increase in its intake taking the total seats to 540.

This was declared at a press conference here by Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Y S Chowdary, and AP Ministers, Ghanta Srinivasa Rao and Manikyala Rao jointly. However, a section in the TDP reportedly lobbied with the Chief Minister, N Chandrababu Naidu, and got a central team to visit Eluruinstead of TP Gudem to locate the NIT.

Stunned at this, Manikyala Rao rushed to Delhi on Friday and met the Party president, Amit Shah, and urged him to intervene. Angered over the “impropriety” of the TDP leadership, Shah called up Venkaiah Naidu and directed him to speak to the Chief Minister. The latter spoke to Naidu and conveyed Amit Shah's displeasure to him. Finally an assurance letter landed at Venkaiah's office from the Chief Secretary, I Y R Krishna Rao's office in this regard. Manikyala Rao left Delhi a happy man.
