Rajahmundry: The surge of pilgrims to various ghats in Rajahmundry and other ghats in East Godavari district continued even on Tuesday, the eighth day of Godavari Maha Pushkaralu. Large number of pilgrims started arriving at all the ghats in the town, particularly Kotilingala ghat and Pushkar ghat right from the early hours on Tuesday.

It is expected that more people will arrive in Rajahmundry to take holy dip in River Godavari as only four days are left for the completion of Maha Pushkaralu. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu went to Narsapur in West Godavari district in the morning and returned to Rajahmundry to monitor the progress of Pushkaralu. Most of the pilgrims are arriving from north coastal Andhra districts and many devotees are also coming from Telangana state to take holy dip in Rajahmundry.

Deputy Chief Minister N Chinarajappa informed that the number of pilgrims who took holy dip during the last eight days in twin Godavari districts has crossed the 3 crore mark. He mentioned that 1.17 crore pilgrims took holy dip in Rajahmundry alone, another 93 lakh in other parts of the district while 98 lakh pilgrims took holy dip in West Godavari district.

Meanwhile, with the increase in pilgrims visiting the town, women are facing inconvenience due to shortage of temporary change rooms at bathing ghats. Pilgrims coming from outside complained that the auto-drivers were demanding high charges. Though the authorities announced that they would take action against auto drivers collecting higher charges, the situation at ground level is not changing.

The auto-rickshaw drivers are charging five times higher than the normal charges. But, the pilgrims have no other option other than paying higher prices as the free buses being operated by the APSRTC are failing to cater to the needs of the devotees. The situation of people waiting in railway stations including the main railway station and Godavari station is pathetic.

The trains are running too late and some of the passengers have to wait for more than 10 hours to board the train and massive crowds are seen stranded in railway stations. The situation at RTC complex in Rajahmundry is also similar and commuters had to wait for hours together for the buses.
