Gujarat Patel agitation echoes in Andhra pradesh

Hyderabad: The government of Andhra Pradesh seems to be sitting on a powder keg with the Patel agitation, which has set political fire to Gujarat, could kindle the fire of Kapus, who have been promised the moon during the last elections by the Telugu Desam Party.

Enthused by the agitation of Patels in seeking quota in various spheres of life, Kapus, who constitute over 25 per cent of the population in Andhra Pradesh, are gearing up for an agitation demanding fulfilling of the promises made by the TDP during its electioneering campaign.

TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu made several promises in an obvious bid to woo the Kapu community which tilted the scales towards the TDP in the twin districts of Godavari. Naidu, who promised to provide Kapus reservation in educational institutions and jobs, announced that a commission would be appointed to work out the modalities for providing better deal for the Kapus, who have been marginalised.

Soon after coming to power, Chandrababu Naidu appointed N Chinnarajappa, who belongs to the Kapu community, as Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister. Finance Minister Y Ramakrishnudu, in his budget speech, spoke of inclusive growth initiatives to bridge the gap between different sections of society.

The government also announced a provision of Rs 100 crore for welfare of Kapus. The Chief Minister had announced that the government would come up with a comprehensive sub-plan for BCs on the lines of SC Sub Plan. Chandrababu Naidu proposed to keep the sub plan in a dynamic mode to make the benefits percolate to various sections of the BCs.

But 15 months down the lane, the Kapus are unhappy that the government had failed to deliver. According to president, Konaseema Telaga, Balija, Kapu JAC, Kalvakolanu Tataji, and other leaders, Naidu had promised that he would constitute a commission within six months to work out the modalities to include Kapus in the BCs list.

Andhra Pradesh Kapu, Vontari Association leader, Yerra Venugopal Rayudu and Pilla Venkateswara Rao, founder president of Kapunadu, Vijayawada, said the government was yet to pass a resolution in the Assembly and send it to the Central Government for approval.

TDP government had promised to release Rs 1,000 crore each year for five years for overall development of the community but released only Rs 100 crore, they said. “MPs and MLAs from the community have also failed to make the Chief Minister fulfill the promises.

Since the elected representatives were not showing interest, various Kapu organisations have already toured eight out of 13 districts in the state to create awareness among the people on the need to launch a united struggle for getting the assurances fulfilled,” said another Kapu leader.

However, Deputy Chief Minister N Chinarajappa explained to The Hans India that the government was committed to fulfilling the assurances given to the community. “The government was in the process of forming a separate corporation with Rs 100 crore. The government proposes to give top priority to education and soon it would constitute a commission to prepare a report on including them in the list of BCs,” said Chinarajappa.

The community leaders from the party would soon reach out to the people and explain to them what the status of the government’s efforts in providing them avenues, said the Deputy Chief Minister.
