Hyderabad: The suicide by B Arch student Rishiteswari of Nagarjuna University led to a ruckus during the question hour in the State Assembly here on Wednesday. Raising the issue during the question hour, YSRCP MLAs R K Roja, Iswari, G Chairtha Reddy lashed out at the government for protecting the college principal Babu Rao.

They alleged that the principal had been moving with students closely and was even sharing drinks with them, YSRCP MLAs alleged.

They said that the then University Vice Chancellor Viyanna Rao had suspended principal’s power to sign cheques following reports of irregularities but the same has been restored after the government appointed in-charge VC Samaba Siva Rao, and questioned as to what transpired in taking such a move, they asked.

The women MLAs said that the Balasubrahmanyam Committee appointed by the government to investigate the causes resulting in the suicide of Rishitheswari was protecting an erring principal. However, refuting the allegations, Deputy Chief Minister N Chinarajappa said that investigation was going and if Babu Rao is found guilty then stringent action would be taken against him.

He further told the members that the government had decided to blacklist the students who resort to ragging and to deny any opportunity for them to study again in any educational institution in the State. Intervening in the discussion, Human Resources Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao said that steps have been taken to ensure that the there would not be recurrence of such incidents of suicides like Rishitheswari.

Earlier, TDP members alleged that the Rishitheswari committed suicide, but the death of Ayesha during the Congress regime was a murder, resulting in the members from the ruling and opposition engaging in heated arguments.

Meanwhile, Speaker Dr Kodela Siva Prasada Rao too intervened and said Acharya Nagarjuna University had become a centre for anti-social elements, and home for outsiders, resulting in sorry state of affairs prevailing in the varsity. He asked the Minister to ensure that the incidents like Rishitheswari would not recur again.
