At least 18 people were killed as a lorry carrying ash overturned at Gundepalli village in East Godavari district in the early hours of Monday. There were 35 labourers atop the lorry at the time of mishap. Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Nimmakayala Chinarajappa announced Rs 2 lakh compensation to the victims.


But the bereaved families staged a dharna demanding Rs 10 lakh compensation and prevented the doctors from performing postmortem to the victims' bodies. They pointed out that the government had announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to the victims of the Chennai building collapse and in several other incidents.
