Eluru: Marking the formal linking of Godavari and Krishna rivers, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will release water from Godavari into Krishna on Wednesday at Ibrahimpatnam village near Vijayawada. This project would help in utilising about 80 TMC of the 3,000 TMC of the Godavari’s flood waters that goes waste into the Bay of Bengal every year.

Successive governments of Andhra Pradesh have been trying to harness at least 10 per cent of this water and divert some of it into the Krishna, whose delta faces an acute shortage of water for irrigation from June to August. While the plan is to eventually divert water from the Polavaram dam, since the dam is still under construction and will take at least 4 to 5 years to be ready, the State government decided to divert Godavari water from the Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme (PLIS) for now.

“With this, Andhra Pradesh would be creating history,” said Water Resources Minister Devineni Umamaheswar Rao.Parakala Prabhakar, Advisor (Communications) to Andhra Pradesh government, said, "The inter-linking of rivers has been on the cards and on the drawing board for a long time, from the days when eminent engineer K L Rao was irrigation minister in the Union Cabinet in the 50s.

The plan was revived during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's NDA government. But, this is the first time that it has been brought to the implementation stage. The place of confluence of the two rivers near Ibrahimpatnam would be developed as a tourism place.Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu will reach Pattiseema on Wednesday morning at 9.30 am by helicopter from Vijayawada. Sharp at 09.45 am, he will switch on the first pump of the PLIS and release water to the Pattiseema Right Main Canal (PRMC).

Later, the Chief Minister will fly to Ibrahimpatnam where he will unveil the pylon of Krishna-Godavari confluence there and participate in a public meeting. PLIS Superintending Engineer V S Ramesh Babu informed The Hans India that the pipeline delivery system to PRMC was completed which will be linked to the project by Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Collector A Babu inspected the arrangements at the venue where Naidu will address the public meeting. Over 2,200 buses were arranged for farmers to attend the meeting from all the districts. More than one lakh farmers are expected to attend the meeting, said Babu.

The Collector said that officials of Krishna and West Godavari worked hard on the project by completing the PRMC works at different places. Earlier the Collector released Godavari water from the PRMC at Nainavaram and Jakkampudi villages at 164 km.The Godavari water will be released to the Budameru diversion channel from the Velagaleru regulator.
