Up to 100 entries will be participating at the all-India FIDE rated open chess tournament that began at the Krishna Industrial and Agricultural Exhibition Society Hall on Thursday. The Vijayawada East Legislator Gadde Ramamohana Rao inaugurated the tournament held under the aegis of the Tummalapalli Chess Academy.

Speaking on the occasion, the MLA said that chess is one of the best indoor games. He also said that chess is often referred as a game of strategy, intelligence and memory. “I strongly believe that it increased the interest in chess among everyone and it is only a matter of time before India regains its strength,” he opined.

Though the FIDE rated tournament is open to everyone, a majority of the participants are below 16 years of age, said APCA general secretary D Sri Hari. “We have seen a lot of youngsters coming forward to play chess.

This tournament has been organised for the first time in the city a boost in providing opportunities to children here,” he said. “A total of 44 cash prizes worth Rs 1.5 lakh and 27 trophies will be presented to winners on the valedictory of the tournament,” he added.
