The ‘South Indian Classical Dance Festival’ began with colourful performances on Friday under the Southern Cultural Centre (Tanjavore), Centre and State Governments Cultural Councils and Young Men Hindu Association (YMHA).

Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kodela Shiva Prasada Rao inaugurated the festival and emphasised the need to encourage old classical art forms in the state. “I will try to establish a Government Music and Dance College in Eluru if public representative come forward. We must popularise the glory of art,” he said.

Audiences enjoyed the variety of performances that included; ‘Aiswarya Warrior’ team of Baroda’s dance playlet Mohini Attam “Shakti”; Kuchipudi dance artiste Amaranth Ghosh’s ‘Jayadeva Ashtapadi’ and Shivasthakam dance. The Ghosh team artistes performed the Ganapathi Kowtham, Govardhan Giridhari, Marakata Manimaya Kuchipudi dance.

Southern Region Cultural Centre Director Dr EN Sajith, City Mayor Sheikh Noorjahan, YMHA Trust Board General Secretary KV Satyanrayana, Working committee President Ch Gopi and others participated in the inaugural meeting. Later the Speaker felicitated the dance artistes.
