Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed concern over suicides of farmers and students in the State. He directed the officials to inquire into the reasons that prompted the farmers and students to take the extreme step.

He told the officials to take necessary measures to prevent suicides.Addressing officials through a tele-conference from his residence here on Sunday,

the Chief Minister said of the total 5,650 suicides of farmers in the country, Maharashtra tops with 2,558 suicides,
Telangana registered 898 suicides, Madhya Pradesh 896, Chhattisgarh 443 and Karnataka 321 while 48 suicides of farmers were reported in AP, according to NCRB report.

Naidu said the suicidal tendency was found more among farmers of Anantapur, Chittoor, Guntur, Kadapa and Prakasam districts. He said farmers were suffering losses by taking risk in agriculture. They were going for cultivation of commercial crops after taking on lease a large extent of land and making huge investments on cultivation.

He said the officials should prevent farmers from investing huge amount of money on borewells where there was a fall in groundwater level. He directed the officials to release input subsidy immediately and encourage farmers to switch over to drip irrigation.

He said officials should study the insurance policies and create awareness among farmers so that they derive benefit from them.Expressing concern over the spurt in cases of suicides by students,
