Contrary to rumours that the mini theatres concept has been shelved due to lack of support from governments of two states, Kauphy Talkies, which is behind this neighbourhood theatres along with hundred of producers and exhibitors, has been going about its work with commitment.

According to sources, they performed bhoomi puja a few weeks ago in AP to establish 100-odd theatres in 52 bus stations, including Vijayawada, Vizag, Tirupati, Palakollu and other places in the first phase and even planning for a launch in TS soon.

Even though, they approached both AP and TS and received positive response but AP CM was ahead in giving nod to establish the mini theatres since he discovered potential in it.

“Naidu was impressed with the small theatres concept and immediately asked Sambasiva Rao, MD, APSRTC, to identify places for them and bhoomi puja was performed to kick-start the concept.

Government even eased norms and urged exhibitors to meet MROs directly and get places sanctioned,” source said. With the drop of viewership due to higher ticket rates in 1600-odd big theatres and multiplexes,

Kauphy Talkies and others envisaged a plan to build mini theatres, wherein viewers could just walk in and enjoy watching big movie at low price.

“Along with bus stations, we will build them in parks and community halls near residential colonies to take cinema to viewers’ doorstep literally.

Each theatre will accommodate 130 viewers, with ticket rates ranging between Rs 50 and Rs 80 per head which would be affordable to all sections of movie buffs,” he adds.

When contacted, V Chandra, head, Marketing and Branding of Kauphy Talkies, admitted that the things have kick-started in AP and would soon be spreading across both States.

“It’s true that we started the concept in AP but we will commence work in TS soon since both governments are supporting our plans,” he says and dismissed rumours that it was shelved.

“Few vested interests are spreading false rumours but it is very much on and happening,” he said.
