The Gandhi Hill Foundation, in association with Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota, and Andhra Pradesh State Council of Science and Technology (APCOST), is organising the World Space Week exhibition on Gandhi Hill in the city.

MP Gokaraju Ganga Raju along with SHAR Deputy General Manager BV Subba Rao and APCOST Project Officer J Dhilleswara Rao formally inaugurated the three-day expo on Wednesday. The expo proved to be a big draw as a large number of students from various schools and colleges in and around the city visited it on the first day.

Expressing her excitement after visiting the expo, V Lakshmi Prasanna, a student of MIC College of Technology, said, ``I heard about launching of PSLV and GSLV from Sriharikota to put satellites into space. The miniature rockets displayed at the expo helped me understand the functioning of rockets better.''

J Harsha, a student of Dhanekula Engineering College, said, ``I have keen interest in research activities taken up by the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota. But I never visited the space centre. The expo provided me an opportunity to be aware of the achievements of SHAR in space research.’’

Speaking to The Hans India, SHAR Deputy General Manager and event coordinator BV Subba Rao said that the expo was aimed to make people in general and students in particular aware of the benefits of space research.

We displayed models of PSLV, GSLV, rockets, satellites and ISRO space research projects, including Chandrayan and Mangalyaan, at the expo. Teachers and resource persons deployed at the expo, will explain in detail the basic principles of space science and the functioning of rockets and satellites to visitors.’’

Essay writing, poster creation, quiz and other competitions will be conducted for students during the expo to develop scientific attitude among them. Senior scientists and engineers from SHAR will participate in an open house programme and deliver lectures on rocket modelling and space research.

SHAR Director Kunhi Krishnan will distribute prizes to the winners of competitions at the valedictory of the expo to be held at APCOST Regional Science Centre at Bhavanipuram on October 9, he added.
