Lakhs of devotees reach the city around this time every year during the Dasara celebrations at the Sri Kanaka Durga temple to offer prayers to the presiding deity in different Alankarams. Here the credit of creating the Goddess in different Alankarams goes to a senior temple priest whose families have been involved in the affair for decades.

Lingambotla Badrinath Babu, the chief priest of Kanaka Durga temple has been decorating the presiding deity in different alankarams for the past several decades. The priest assisted by two junior priests start decoration of the deity from 11 pm every day. During the course the priests also observe fasts. Speaking to the Hans India, the senior priest said that the opportunity came to him as an inherited gift.

On the first day he has to decorate the presiding deity in Swarnakavacha Durga Devi Alankaram, Balatripurasundari Devi on the next day, Sri Gayatri Devi, Sri Mahalakshmi, Sri Annapurnadevi, Sri Lalitatripurasundari Devi, Sri Saraswathi Devi, Sri Durga Devi, Sri Mahisasura Mardhini and Sri Rajarajeswari Devi respectively on thefollowing days. He said that the decoration of the presiding deity should reflect with the particular Avataram.

“Saraswati Devi alankaram and Mahisasura Mardini Devi Alankaram take more time,” he added. The job of the priests turn challenging before Moola Nakshatram and Vijayadasami as the temple is closed for just two hours and they have to complete the alankarams within the stipulated time to facilitate the temple authorities to start the darshan from 3 am.

“Dasara celebrations this year has gained more importance as they coincide with Amaravati capital foundation. The presiding deity would be decorated in ten avatarams,” shared temple chief priest BS Sandilya. As per the directions of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu special pujas would be performed during Dasara celebrations for the success of Amaravati capital foundation and for the progress of the state.
