Not only the common man but even Ministers and other VIPs will make a beeline to receive the annadanam.

Devotees having food at the Annadanam at Sri Sringeri Peetam at Arjun Street on Friday Speaking to The Hans India on Friday, Temple Executive Officer Ch Narasing Rao said ‘Our aim is to see that the hungry are fed''. Right from the day one of the ten-day Dasara festivity, the devasthanam has been offering free meals to the devotees comprising dal, curry, chatni, sambar, butter milk, pulihora and rice.

About 80,000 devotees are expected to have the annadanam during the festivity. Giving a detailed structure of the annadanam scheme being offered at the temple, he said that scheme was launched on January 1, 1991 with a fixed deposit of just Rs 15 lakh. Earlier free meals were offered to 60 devotees per day.

Later on, the annadanam scheme has got massive response among the devotees and pilgrims visiting the shrine. About Rs 30 crore was contributed by the devotees in the last two years in the form of donations for the functioning of the scheme.

“It speaks volumes of their trust in Goddess Kanaka Durga and the annadanam scheme,” says Executive Officer Ch Narsing Rao. Explaining the significance of the ‘annadanam’, Temple Head Priest Vishnubhotala Siva Prasad Sharma said ``Annadhana is the best form of dhana.

It is known that the Goddess Kanakdurga will be adorned as ‘Sri Annapurna Devi’ on the fifth day of Dasara with a feeding bowl and a ladle in her hands to serve food to the devotees.

Devotees who visit the shrine will make sure to have the prasadam of the deity, not only during Dasara festivity, the devasthanam will also provide free meals to at least 5,000 devotees every day under Annadanam scheme, he says.
