Amaravati: Protests erupted across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana by the cadres of Congress and YSRCP alleging that the ‘Babu Modi Jodi’ has shattered the hopes of the five crore Telugu-speaking people. The opposition parties said that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had failed to impress upon Modi to announce the special status or special package for the residuary state.

Opposition parties -- Congress and the Communist Party of India (CPI) and YSRCP -- staged a protest on Friday by burning effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Amaravati. The dissent was also witnessed in Telangana as T Congress leaders like Shabbir Ali and P Sudhakar Reddy said that the Prime Minister did very little to meet the aspirations of Telugu people.

Shabbir Ali and P Sudhakar Reddy said, “Trimurthys comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Chief Ministers N Chandrababu Naidu and K Chandrashekar Rao, had cheated the Telugu-speaking people of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana State.” Telugus, who expected some major announcements and sops on the occasion of foundation ceremony of Amaravati, were asked to be satisfied with two pots; one containing earth from Parliament and another water from River Yamuna, they said.

Congress workers led by former MLAs Malladi Vishnu and Devineni Nehru burnt Modi's effigy at Andhra Ratna Bhavan office in Amaravati. "Congress party will continue its agitation against the State and the Centre to attain special status for Andhra Pradesh," Vishnu said.

They demanded that Naidu pull out his ministers from the Union Cabinet. Nehru said the Congress is also fighting for allocation of funds for the Polavaram project, special financial package for backward districts as specified in the Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation Act.

The Congress leaders said that the Chief Minister had spent nearly Rs 400 crore for Amaravati capital foundation. But Modi failed to honour the sentiments of Andhra people.

Earlier, Youth Congress leaders led by state president D Avinash staged a rasta roko on Eluru road and burnt the effigy of Modi.

In Guntur, CPI(M) party workers led by district secretary Pashyam Rama Rao took out a rally in the city and burnt effigy of Modi in protest against the silence of Prime Minister on issues relating to special status, financial packages or on packages to backward areas. In Kakinada and Rajamahendravaram, the CPM, YSRCP and Congress East Godavari units organised protests and demonstrations.

Interestingly, there was a muted dissent in the TDP camp. Guntur MP Galla Jayadev expressed his unhappiness over the statement made by Modi. He said Modi’s speech had disappointed him and if the Centre adopts this kind of attitude then being in the government at the Centre may not be of much use. Jayadev was also unhappy because his name did not figure in the foundation plaque.

Even the senior party leader G Butchaiah Chowdary said that the PM’s speech had left them a bit disappointed.
