World Stroke Day was observed at Global Super Specialty Hospital in the city on Thursday. The theme of the World Stroke Day 2015 is ‘I am Woman’. Talking to the news men at hospital premises here on Thursday, Hospital Director Dr MSC Bose said that the World Stroke Campaign has chosen to focus on this theme because women are more at risk of having a stroke than men.

He said that a stroke is a cerebrovascular accident, and it occurs suddenly, without any warning. The person could be fine one day, and could suffer a stroke the next, resulting in paralysis. ‘We have all the facilities here to identify patients with stroke and treat them and we have been conducting medical tests like MRI scans, Lipid profile, eco-cardiograph, neuro surgeon and neurologist consultation to the patients at a cost of Rs 3,000 from October 29 to 31 of this month, he said.

Explaining about the types of strokes affects, he said that there were two kinds of strokes. Ischemic strokes are caused by blockages to blood vessels, while haemorrhagic strokes are caused by the bursting of blood vessels. Factors like high blood pressure, stress, diabetes and sedentary lifestyle add to chances of stroke among younger women.

He reiterated the need to keep the risk factors causing stroke under control diabetes, hypertension, increased cholesterol, smoking, alcohol, obesity and cardiac ailments. Any one factor, if left uncontrolled could lead to a stroke, HE SAID. Global Super Specialty Hospital Neuro Physician Madhusudhan Rao was also present.
