The Krishna district will hold library week from November 14, said the district joint collector and the district Grandhalaya Samstha chairman, Gandham Chandrudu.

Addressing a meeting of the district librarians here on Friday, Chandrudu asked them to gear up for the library week celebrations and promote readership among the people. He said that the district had proposed to open four new libraries this year. The new libraries would come up at Gannavaram, Veeravalli, Athkuru and Rayanavaripalem villages, he added.

Stating that the government had released funds for the establishment of the four libraries, he asked the library secretary to begin the process in consultation with the legislators of the respective areas. He further asked the officials to make a clear statement of the library cess dues from the local bodies and initiate steps to collect the funds.

He wanted the officials to have a dialogue with the commissioners of the local bodies and get the library cess collected by them from various taxes. He said 8 per cent of the house tax has to be paid to the libraries as cess and asked the officials to collect it from the local bodies and the gram panchayats.

He also asked the officials to improve facilities at the libraries and promote readership among people. He directed them to keep the libraries and reading rooms open as per the schedule and ensure that the readers are not disappointed.
