Students need to develop interest in Speed Math

Expert in Speed Math S V Ramakrishna Reddy stressed the need for the inclusion of speed math as it is necessary for a greater understanding of what is this subject about. Participating in a one day workshop on ‘Speed Math’ by the Department of Mathematics of SDM Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala here on Friday, Ramakrishna Reddy said that Speed Math is concerned with a universal structure of Math revealed through a personal approach to problem-solving and other fields of human activity.

It is described by a small collection of aphorisms called sutras. Sutras express naturally occurring mental processes by which mathematical problems can be solved with the least effort. Speed Math does not advocate the sole use of blanket methods through which students can reduce problems to a mere mechanical responses to given stimuli.

He called upon students to pursue speed math with high interest which is an intelligent and holistic approach that improves reason and develops strategic thinking. College Principal Dr T Vijaya Lakshmi, Mathematics Department Head S Sudhavani and other faculty members were also present.
