Visakhapatnam: It was a memorable day at the sea for the thousand and odd students, who came from different parts of the country, to witness the naval prowess in the Bay of Bengal off the city on Saturday.

The students, along with the naval officials and media personnel, were perched on three naval warships INS Ranvijay, INS Airavat and INS Sumedha of Eastern Naval Command. The exercise was part of the Navy Week and curtain raiser for the upcoming International Fleet Review being held here from February 4, next year.

The Naval personnel demonstrations were really exciting. However, there was some disappointment as an attempt of thrilling replenishment operation, an exercise to shift men and material from one ship to another with the help of a rope called ‘jack stay’ failed in the initial stage.

The school students those coming from Sainik School were excited and said they would be joining the armed forces, particularly Indian Navy in which services were more thrilling.

Captain Manish Sharma, Commanding Officer INS-Ranvijay said that the Day-at-Sea, a rehearsal for IFR-2016, was conducted successfully and several students experienced great moments during the exercise. The INS Ranvijay has sailed 100 nautical miles and the speed of the ship touched 20 nautical miles per hour at times while returning to the base.

The challenged children, who were also present, along with their parents and guardians, were impressed with the naval exercises and thanked the navy for providing an opportunity to their children.

Earlier, captain Manish Sharma, Commanding Officer of INS Ranvijay, presented prizes and mementoes to the winners of painting, essay and quiz competitions on board INS-Ranvijay.

The prize winners said that sailing on warship was an unforgettable memory in their life and they have been waiting to see the operations of the various navies during the International Fleet Review.
