Kadapa: About 55 to 60 inmates of the Central Prison here serving life term are likely to be released on the eve of the Republic Day after the government gave its nod. The list of the prisoners to be released for good behaviour is likely to be finalised by the officials in four days and would be submitted to the government.

The 55-60 prisoners have initially been identified. Some names are likely to be filtered. A prisoner, Srikanth, of Chennur in Gudur mandal of Nellore district, has stirred a hornet’s nest claiming that the decision to free the prisoners was politically motivated. Although. the government’s move has generated happiness among the prisoners and their families, Srikanth is not pleased. He had been in the Nellore prison from 2001 to 2008 in a case of kidnap-murder. Later, he was shifted to the Kadapa Central Prison.

Srikanth, who has been freed on parole 14 days ago, was brought back to the prison on Sunday. Speaking to the media before going to the prison, he accused the officials of rendering injustice to those prisoners who are eligible to be released. He contended that the GO on the release of prisoners was intended to benefit only those convicted in the murder case of YS Raja Reddy, father of former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

He intends to write letters to the President and the Governor, while alleging that he had been denied the facility, as also in 2013 and 2014, although his behaviour has been good.
