Bhadrachalam: The art lovers from all over world look at the portraits of the noted artist and film director Bapu with awe and reverence.

Scholars, lyricists, poets and even the common man appreciate the lovely paintings created by the legendary artist. Any poet worth his salt describes the heroine of his poetry with that of the caricature created by Bapu. In one word, Bapu ‘Bomma’ means the most beautiful woman.

However, for reasons better known to the officials of Sri Sitaramachandra Swamy Devastanam at Bhadrachalam, the pieces de art of Bapu depicting the epic Ramayana were dumped in a storeroom. Known for his admiration and devotion towards Sri Rama, Bapu created a number of portraits of his favourite god depicting the story of Ramayana and presented them to the Devastanam some years ago.

The then chief minister Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy formally inaugurated the exhibition of ‘Chitraroopa Ramayanam’ constructed at a cost of Rs 4 lakh on the premises of Mithila Stadium six years back. The portraits depict the story of Ramayana which could be easily understood by the common man.

Such beautiful portraits are now languishing in the storeroom on the temple premises waiting for their retrieval. Executive Officer K Jyothi clarified that the portraits were removed from the gallery for the convenience of pilgrims during Pushkarams. Moreover, the rainy water seeped into the stadium premises damaging some of the portraits, she added.

The EO said that the portraits would be cleaned and broken frames would be repaired before putting them for public display at Tanisha Kalyana Mandapam soon.

One could understand the apathy of the officials who remain passive to restore the exhibition of Bapu portraits even four months after the Pushkarams concluded.
