Nellore: Incessant rains that wrecked Chennai had a damaging effect on Nellore too. The traders from the district, who are dependent on Chennai for supply of goods and raw materials, are facing a tough time, with life coming to a standstill due to heavy rains and floods.
It should be recalled that majority of traders in the city depend on Chennai and other commercial cities like Coimbatore, Salem, Madurai for goods such as spices, electronics, automobile parts, gold and silver ornaments, textiles, and other consumable goods owing to tax structure which is profitable for them.
Many electronic goods, computer hardware parts, mobile phone accessories, spices such as pepper, jeera, local soaps like Oorvasi and others are cheaper in Chennai when compared to Andhra Pradesh. Most traders buy these in bulk and transport them on train by managing Railway and city police. This activity has been going on for decades. Even more it has been a common practice for people in the city and district to visit Chennai even to by a piece of cloth.
The local traders engage the services of middle men - who transport goods from different cities on a daily basis. This type of trade is profitable with lesser tax in Tamil Nadu than that of Andhra Pradesh. These middlemen travel regularly to various parts of Chennai and other cities for transporting goods. However, the daily cycle was interrupted from November 8 due to heavy downpour and lack of connectivity by road and rail.
“The heavy rains in Chennai turned out to be a bane for traders of Nellore and other parts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh, who rely on Chennai for supply of goods. Most traders aren’t getting enough supplies and are looking at other business centres like Vijayawada and Guntur,” said K V Chalamaiah, Executive Member of AP Chamber of Commerce.
“We are unable to get any goods from Chennai so we are looking at Vijayawada and Guntur. We might lose profits as we lost the advantage of lesser tax in TN, but it is inevitable until situation in Chennai becomes normal,” said a middleman based in Kavali. Because of inaccessibility to many parts of Tamil Nadu, traders are exploring news sources in Vijayawada and Guntur. Hyderabad is not lucrative to traders barring cosmetics and clothers and Visakhapatnam pose logistic problems.
