Tirupati: The distribution of LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs which was taken up in Chitoor district last month, as part of the statewide energy efficiency activities, is going at brisk pace.
The APSPDCL (Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited) has taken up the task of distributing LEDs in the district. So far, the SPDCL had distributed LED bulbs to 3.5 lakh consumers as against the total of 7.4 lakh, according to SPDCL superintendent engineer Haranatha Rao.
Speaking to The Hans India here on Friday, Haranatha Rao said that the distribution was almost over in many mandals like Srikalahasti, Penumur, Chittoor while it was going on in full swing in other mandals and towns. In all, 100 centres were set up at 65 mandal headquarters and sub-stations in the district for distribution of LEDs to the consumers, he said adding that each household would be given two LEDs at the cost of Rs 10 each. Rao said adequate staff was deputed in all the centres to ensure smooth and faster distribution of LEDs.
However, the SPDCL official said that the distribution of LEDs was slowed down due to heavy rains that lashed the district particularly in the eastern mandals of Tirupati division but picked up with the respite from rains. He informed that the distribution of LEDs would be completed in all the mandals and towns before the month-end.
Expressing satisfaction over the distribution of LEDs, a consumer Nagaraj, who received the LED bulbs at the centre located in NGOs colony in the city, said that the bulbs were delivered to him after verification of the documents that he submitted, along with the payment of Rs 20.
A SPDCL employee at the Singalagunta sub-station centre in the city said that the LED bulbs were given to a consumer after the verification of his latest electricity bill and the Aadhaar card. It may noted here that the distribution of LED bulbs was taken up in Chittoor district under phase II of distribution of LEDs in the state by the AP government which has been vigorously implementing energy efficiency activities through its ‘State Energy Conservation Mission (SECM)’ for the benefit of state and stakeholders. Each consumer is expected to reduce his power bill by Rs 50 to 100 per month with the use of the LED bulbs being provided by the government at a nominal cost of Rs 10 each against its market price of Rs 600. In Chittoor district, the SPDCL is expecting to save about 110
million units annually after the distribution of LEDs which was taken up at a cost of Rs 16.2 crore.
