A record number of 15,000 participants from all walks of the society will be in action for the first ever Amaravati Marathon to be held in the city on January 10, 2016, according to Krishna District Olympic Association (KDOA) president Pattabhi.

Talking to the news men here on Monday, Pattabhi informed that the event was being jointly organized by an NGO, Disease Eradication through Education and Prevention (DEEP) and Government of Andhra Pradesh.

Giving a detailed structure of the event, he said that the event will feature Amaravati Half Marathon, 10K and 5K runs. The marathons start from Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium at 6 am and the participants should run over 21.5 kms to reach Uddandarayunipalem Village, where foundation stone laid for the new capital Amaravati, he said.

DEEP, NGO Founders Dr Rakesh Kalapala and Dr Madhu Vasepalli said that Amaravati Marathon will be a platform for the people of Andhra Pradesh to extend their relationship with the new capital Amaravati. The objective of conducting the Marathon, every year on the second Saturday of January is to welcome the auspicious festival Sankranthi ushering a healthier future for the capital city, he said.

City Police Commissioner Gautham Sawang, Chess Grand Master Koneru Hampi, Cine Actor Ram Pothineni and others also spoke on the occasion.
