Vijayawada: Deeply saddened over the deluge at Chennai in Tamil Nadu, citizens and organisations of the city are coming forward to extend their helping hand.

Catering to the immediate needs like medicines, clothing and preserved foods have topped the list of contributions besides money that can go towards their necessities.

With a motive under Vijayawada Chennai Relief (#vijayawadachennairelief), the denizens are making efforts to reach out to the people who faced the fury of nature.

A group of city-based youngsters led by an employee and volunteer Vijju Vinnakota is making sure that the information of the city-based people who got stranded in the floods is updated on helpline services and vice versa. She said that things like nightwear, inner wear, skirts, towels, soaps, sanitizer like bleaching powder, rain coats, blankets, antibiotics, emergency flash lights, cooking material, kerosene stoves, groceries, dippers among others are required. Biscuits are commonly distributed in large quantities but they do not cater to the hunger of adults and children for a long time. Anybody who wants to donate products could buy any of the needed stuff except for biscuits, she said.

As soon as the floods reached a point beyond control, Vijju has been contacting people through her social network page and is posting updates as and then. “Need of the hour are blankets, water, medicines, non perishable food and products like rice, flour, salt, sugar, personal hygiene items, brushing set, clothes in good conditions, baby food and needs, milk powders, mosquito repellents, ointments for skin, footwear”, she wrote on her social network page.

As of now, 100 kg of rice was already sent and three boxes of new and used clothes, a box of mosquito repellents, water cans for edible purposes, Rs 10,000 worth medicines, 25 kilos of rice bag are ready to be sent. “If there are more donations from people, we would ensure the help reaches to the needy especially in areas like Cuddalore,” said Vijju. Relief collection for Chennai from Vijayawada has been initiated to be sent through a sponsored truck and anyone who wants to be a part of it can contact Vijju at 8501077999 or message her facebook for contributing relief materials.

“It would be very easy for distribution if the packaged boxes displayed the names of items in it. People are in need of personal materials and clothing besides Tetanus dosages. Volunteers to promote the word and contributors are welcome,” Vijju added.
