Vijayawada: A Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Mahesh Chandra Laddha was constituted by DGP J V Ramudu, to investigate the deaths caused by the spurious liquor in Krishna Lanka on Monday that claimed lives of five daily wage labourers even as former MLA Malladi Vishnu, who is named as accused in the case, has gone into hiding.

Speaking to the newsmen on Wednesday, the DGP said that a 8-member SIT has been formed to study, investigate and supervise the spurious liquor case booked under Sec 37 (A) (I) (II) of AP Prohibition and Excise Act and 204, 328 of IPC. The SIT will also look into the cases that are entrusted by Commissioner of Police, Vijayawada.

The SIT team consists of SP of Greyhounds Senthil Kumar, DSP T Kanaka Raju, DSP of SC and ST Cell of East Godavari district M Venkateswara Rao, Circle Inspectors of Guntur range K Srinivasa Rao and K Abdul Karim, Circle Inspector of Jaggaiahpeta Y V Naidu, Sub-Inspector of Guntur Urban Ch Rambabu, Sub-Inspector of Lalpeta Guntur Meera Saheb. The team will be supervised by Commissioner of Police D Gawtham Sawang.

The special team will take over the investigations immediately. Meanwhile, former MLA Malladi Vishnu, who is the City Congress Committee president, went into hiding after he was named as accused in the case. He along with his family members who are also accused are unavailable for the police and are said to be hiding.

Police have arrested Swarna Bar and Restaurant’s cashiers T Venkateswara Rao, N Venkata Nageswara Rao, N Malakonda Reddy, Manager K V Ramana Rao, snacks vendor T Venkata Raju, suppliers Bhanothu Sreenu, N Durga Rao, floor cleaner A Bhupathi in connection with the case.

The whereabouts of relatives of the former MLA Vishnu, licence holders of the bar Bhagavathula Sarat Chandra, Kavuri Purna Chandra Sarma, M Lakshmi Saraswati and M Balatirupa Sundaramma are also not known. While Sarat Chandra and Purna Chandra are brothers-in-law of Vishnu, Sundaramma is his mother and Lakshmi is his sister.

Vishnu’s cousins Malladi Rajendra Prasad and Malladi Srinivas and wife Malladi Rajeswari own the building in whose cellar the bar is being run from 2011. Since his mother, who is a senior citizen, could not be blamed for the deaths, police are trying to establish a strong evidence to prove that Malladi Vishnu is related to the case. They also learnt that Vishnu is holding the business and his brother takes care of it.
