Vijayawada: The APCC vice-president and former Minister Devineni Rajasekhar (Nehru) here on Friday asked Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to withdraw VAT exemption given to the gas-based power plants. He said that the State government had granted Rs 1,200 crore worth exemption of Value Added Tax (VAT) to the gas-based power plants in the State, adding that the exemption was against the interests of the State, which is facing revenue deficit post bifurcation.

Nehru said that the Chief Minister was denying benefits to the farmers and the self-help group women in the name of revenue deficit.

The farmers who have lost their crops due to drought and flood damage were not paid compensation yet stating that the government was facing revenue deficit, he said and wondered how the same State had granted Rs 1,200 crore VAT exemption to the power plants.

Nehru said that the government had given VAT exemption to the Lanco, GMR, GVK and RVK companies which have power plants in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states. He said that none of these companies were giving power to Andhra Pradesh forcing the State government to purchase power at Rs 6 a unit.
