The Chief Minister told the drought team that that the State received 71 mm rainfall as against average rainfall of 168 mm and 359 mandals in 9 districts were declared as drought-hit.

Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said Andhra Pradesh suffered a loss of Rs 3,759.97 crore due to drought and floods and appealed to the Central teams who are touring the State to assess flood loss and sanction Rs 2,000.56 crore for drought relief, to overcome the present crisis.

The Central teams to asses flood situation led by Joint Secretary of Home affairs Satyendra Garg met Chief Minister here on Friday.

Explaining the flood related losses, the Chief Minister said Nellore, Chittoor and Kadapa districts received 6 to 11 per cent excess rainfall between November 15 and 23. He said that the agricultural sector suffered a loss of Rs 426.94 crore, horticulture Rs 335.27 crore, livestock Rs 17.97 crore, fisheries Rs 492.96 cr, handloom Rs 4.77 crore, irrigation Rs 818.29 cr, roads and buildings Rs 711.9 crore, electricity Rs 35.05 crore, panchayat raj Rs 589.54 cr and municipalities Rs 124.34 crore.

He said the State government has submitted a report to Centre on flood loss on December 5 and explained about the flood relief measures initiated by State government. Later, the three Central teams appointed to study drought conditions in the State, who inspected the drought-hit mandals on December 8 and 9, met Chief Minister at his camp office. Interacting with them the Chief Minister said that farmers failed to cultivate 5 lakh hectares of land in 10 districts due to drought conditions.

He said that the State received 71 mm rain fall as against average rainfall of 168 mm and 359 mandals in 9 districts were declared as drought-hit.

Explaining the steps taken by the State government to mitigate drought conditions, the CM said that seeds were distributed at 50 per cent subsidy. “A total of Rs 56.36 crore was spent on rural water supply and Rs 40 crore towards urban water supply and Rs 6.1 crore towards animal husbandry,” he added.

Chief Minister said that the agricultural sector was neglected for the past 10 years and asserted to the central teams that TDP government took several initiatives to save crops through river liking, rain guns and achieved 30 additional yields.
