Bhimavaram (West Godavari): The CPI (M) West Godavari district committee has demanded the State government to reduce the Kolleru Lake from plus fifth contour to third contour, as assured by TDP in its election manifesto. It also demanded for conduct of contour survey immediately.

CPI (M) district secretary B Balaram on Friday said the government was intentionally delaying the Kolleru issue by way of constituting multiple committees.

He recalled that the TDP had assured people in Kolleru that the bird sanctuary would be reduced from fifth to third contour to maintain ecological balance. But there has been no headway in this regard, he lamented.

He demanded the government to implement Kolleru channelization as per the reports of Mitra and Sriramakrishnaiah Committees besides constructing regulator

across Upputeru to save villages and agricultural fields from inundation.

He also wanted the government to take up de-siltation of the Upputeru old course, and to control the industrial effluents being diverted into the fresh water lake.
