AP cabinet nod for pvt varsities
The Cabinet had cleared the Private Universities Bill here on Wednesday and the bill would be tabled in the ensuing session of Assembly, said the Minister for Human Resources, Ganta Srinivasa Rao.

Vijayawada: The Cabinet had cleared the Private Universities Bill here on Wednesday and the bill would be tabled in the ensuing session of Assembly, said the Minister for Human Resources, Ganta Srinivasa Rao.
Briefing media persons after the Cabinet meeting, the Minister said that the private universities would establish their institutions in the State once the bill gets through the Assembly. He said that the government has already received applications from 18 private universities from across the country.
The government would look into these applications and clear them on the basis of their merit and performance, he said. He further added that the government would also allow global universities to have their institutions in the State. This would be taken up in the second phase, he added.
He further said that they have consulted experts across the country while preparing the bill and added that they have also gathered the views of the Members of Legislative Council who represent teachers and graduates constituencies. The draft bill was modified accordingly to benefit the students from the State and improve the quality of education, he added.
The Minister for Finance, Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, who was also present, said that admissions into these universities would be based on merit. He said that there was resistance when the government had established Indian School of Business (ISB) in Hyderabad.
However, things have settled down with ISB getting global reputation, he said and added that admissions into these universities too would be accepted by the people once they become a reality.
However, the Minister said that the government would consider providing financial assistance to the economically backward students who get admission into these institutions basing on their merit.
When asked about the existing universities in the State, the Minister said that the government would fill all vacant posts in the universities and improve facilities. He further added that the government would also make them compete with the private universities.
“We will revamp and strengthen the existing universities and make them competent enough to take on private universities. This would be a healthy competition that would benefit both the students and institutions as well,” the Minister added.
