Anantapur: Many CPM activists and leaders besides hundreds of farmers who have been opposing the allotment of thousands of acres for a solar plant in NP Kunta mandal were arrested by the police during a visit by former party general secretary and Politburo member Prakash Karat.

Addressing a public meeting attended by hundreds of farmers in NP Kunta, Karat alleged that police personnel themselves staged a ‘rasta roko’ instead of farmers. He alleged that thousands of acres for the plant have been taken over and fenced without paying compensation to farmers.

The police allegedly prevented farmers from meeting the CPM leader who is touring the area to assess the farmers’ agitation and to brief the central committee of the party for taking it up as a national issue. They clamped ban orders in NP Kunta since Wednesday night. Kadiri DSP Ramanjaneyulu claims that the gathering of farmers had no permission. The CPM leaders and activists sought to take out a rally from the Kadiri R & B Guest House to N P Kunta but police tried to stop it resulting in a tense situation.
