He informed that the activity would be completed by end of January to make the beach ready to host the International Fleet Review from February 4.

Addressing a press conference at Ramakrishana Beach here on Thursday, the chairman said the VPT has taken up the beach nourishment with a cost of Rs13 crore as part of erosion control measure.
The Ramakrishna beach had witnessed severe beach erosion during last few years, more severely last year and the government had taken up measures by appointing a task force apart from roping in the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) for expert advice.
Citing causes for the erosion, the Krishna Babu said, “Frequent cyclones had its impact on the beach and the remedial steps were being taken since this year. We are taking up beach nourishment with the help from Dredging Corporation of India (DCI).”
Detailing about the task force and NIOT findings, the Chairtman said that NIOT suggested construction of permanent structures like retaining walls and underwater structures to control the erosion. However, the government had sent the report to the renowned Deltares University in Netherland, which conducts studies in sea erosion all over the world.
It opposed construction of permanent structures and suggested sand balance on the shore. IT said permanent structures will give some relief temporarily but will create further complications in the long term.
Krishna Babu said the government will take experts suggestions on the reports and will take a final decision. Andhra Pradesh has 974 kms long coast line of which 241 km stretch has been facing sea erosion in spite of having 272 km long sand trap.
“The dredger had already pumped one Lakh cubic meters of sand to the shore and another 1.5 lakh cubic meters will be pumped and it will take another five to ten days to complete the work,” he added In view of the international fleet review event, VPT had taken up beautification works like road connectivity, tree plantations, street lighting with a cost of Rs 25 cores in the vicinity of the port.
The Chairman said that they have taken up developments works within the port area like up-gradation of roads, tree plantation, landscaping, street lighting and other works at a cost of Rs40 crore.
