Expo to showcase handicrafts of over 20 States

Vijayawada: The National Handloom Expo 2015-16 will showcase hand-made products of the artisans from more than 20 States including diverse cultural programmes to entertain the visitors.

The expo which is supported by the Indian Handloom Brand, Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Commissioner of Handlooms and Textiles along with Society or Weavers Welfare in Andhra Pradesh (SWAAP), is all set to unveil its rich collection of exquisite work at Rice and Oil Millers’ Association Hall, located at Gandhi Nagar in the city from Sunday.

Addressing the newsmen here on Saturday, Handlooms Minister Kollu Ravindra said that the exhibitions are part of the government’s initiatives to promote the culture and handicrafts from across the country. There would be 20 per cent discount on all merchandise, he added.

Textiles ranging from linen cotton to simple silk, grand Kanjeevaram wedding picks along with spreads, furnishings, carpets, and others are going to be put up for display and sale till January 11. While the artisans from various parts of the country are taking part in the programme, works from West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam, Tamilnadu, Orissa, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, and Bihar and from two Telugu-speaking states are going to steal the show, the Minister said.

Meanwhile, to entertain visitors and to keep them engaged, the organisers have roped in several film and television personalities to perform comedy skits, mono action, mimicry and magic show. Folk dances, traditional dances of participating states, music concerts would be performed throughout the event.

Commissioner for Handlooms Naresh Penumaka, APCO Managing Director Jawahar Basha, SWAAP Managing director Murali Krishna and others were also present.
