Misdeeds in sanction of pensions irk Minister

Chittoor: Minister for Forests and Environment B Gopalakrishna Reddy expressed his displeasure on lapses in issuance of pensions for the elderly people, widows and physically challenged persons in the district. The minister has ordered the DRDA authorities to take stringent action against the authorities concerned at the lower level who sanctioned the pensions for ineligible persons.

The government will not tolerate irregularities in the pension scheme. The authorities should inquire into the genuineness and the eligibility of the applicants for sanctioning the pensions. It is learnt that some unmarried women, too, have obtained widow pensions at the behest of the local leaders, he regret

ted. He made it clear that no political interference would be entertained in the scheme. Specific guidelines were issued to the Janmabhoomi Committees to select the eligible beneficiaries for sanctioning pensions. Those who have attained 65 years of age, belonging to BPL would be given old age pension. With regard to the physically challenged persons, 40 per cent of disability is taken as criterion for sanctioning Rs 1,000 pension and 80 per cent disability for Rs 1,500, he added.
