Participated children at NSM Public School About 70 children between the age group of 9 to 16 participated at the Winter Parliament Session organised by the Montfort Social Institute (MSI) at NSM Public School on Sunday.

Representing the slums in the city, the children discussed on ‘Amaravati A Capital for All’ while donning the roles of Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Home Minister, Environment Minister, Health Minister, Gender Minister and Sports Minister.

The Parliament session highlighted the importance of housing for the poor section and requested the government to include better housing for the slum dwellers in the new capital. The children stressed on the importance of sanitation and hygiene; and also emphasised the need of allocating space near the houses as there was no space for them to play due to the bad planning of the township.

The discussion also included topics like providing security for the girls, education on computer, need for toilets at government schools and poor drainage line systems. Another major factor was the environment issue where the children suggested to develop the city as a green one rather than cutting down the trees for establishing electricity poles on the roads.

Later, the Children’s Parliament unanimously passed the resolutions which were handed over to MSI Director Br Vargehese Theckanath and city advisory committee convener D Gopi.

Br Vargehese emphasised the need of government taking the resolutions made by the Children’s Parliament into consideration to develop ‘Amaravati’ as an inclusive and sustainable capital for the people. “Measures will be taken by the MSI in submitting the representations to the Minister for Municipal Administration P Narayana and City Mayor Koneru Sreedhar made by the Children’s Parliament” he said.
