CALL MONEY SCANDAL

Nearly 70 per cent victims are women

Vijayawada: The number of complaints being filed at police stations under the Vijayawada Commissionerate alleging harassment from money lenders in the call money scam is increasing by the day. The scam which was unearthed recently, has brought to light the darker side of micro finance system that crawled up to all parts of the city.

The rise in the number of complaints is a perfect example of how money lenders are making the most by victimising people in need. In the Commissionerate, so far 635 cases were booked against tens of money lenders who were accused of demanding not just sexual favours from the victims but also their properties and bank balances.

About 100 raids were conducted by the police personnel and 55 accused were taken into custody. Most of them have secured station bail after being produced in the court. There might be about 20 to 25 accused, who are still absconding. Every day, 40 to 60 complaints are being registered at different police stations. Many people who are victims of the scam from other districts of the State are also reaching Vijayawada Commissionerate to file complaints, it is learnt.

A majority of the complaints are being registered at the police stations at Krishna Lanka, One Town, Nunna, Ibrahimpatnam, Bhavanipuram, Patamata and Penamaluru areas. Among the complainants, 60 to 70 per cent are women, who confessed that they borrowed money for purposes like education of their children, business investment and other debt settlements.

However, they had to mortgage their properties, handover the bank books, blank cheques and ATM cards (if any) besides having to be physically and verbally abused at times. Not just women but the victims also included government employees from lower cadre who approached the money lenders for immediate requirements. DCP LKV Ranga Rao (Kalidas) talking to The Hans India said, “We are trying to infuse confidence among the rest of victims if there are any.

More and more cases are being registered and many accused including a few rowdy- sheeters are also being taken into custody. We are assuring people of justice and that is why there is rise in number of complaints. It is a good gesture that comes in as cooperation from people to put an end to this type of violation.’’
