Andhra Pradesh Water Resources Minister D Umamaheswara Rao inaugurated ‘National Handloom Expo’ in the city on Sunday. Hea said “To protect interests of the weavers the state government runs many handloom exhibitions to promote the handloom textiles.

About 10 lakh families in the state have to depend on handloom and the state government is committed to protect their interests by providing various welfare schemes and also subsidies to continue their traditional profession.”

Andhra Pradesh Minister for Textiles Kollu Ravindra, who was present on the occasion, said that the state government provides 50 per cent electricity subsidy for handloom machines and 20 per cent subsidy on the yarn and colours purchased by the weavers. Ravindra further said that the state government waived loans of weavers to the extent of Rs 110 crore in this year to save them from debt burdens.

Commissioner for Handlooms Naresh Penumaka, APCO Chairman Murugudu Hanumantha Rao, Managing Director Jawahar Basha, SWAAP Managing Director Murali Krishna and others were also present during the inauguration of the expo. The expo will run till January 11.
