Eluru: CPM has warned that it will resist the State government’s efforts to announce fertile lands and areas as an aqua zone and would take up a massive agitation to protect the livelihood of small, marginal and tenant farmers.

The CPM West Godavari district committee activists meeting was held on Monday at Udharaju Bhavan here under the chairmanship of party’s district secretariat member C Babu Rao.

Addressing the meeting, CPM district secretary B Balaram said the officials are sanctioning permissions to dig prawn and aqua ponds indiscriminately, to destroy the fertile agricultural lands. The district committee headed by Collector K Bhaskar without studying the status of land fertility is blindly permitting the pisciculture.
He alleged that the revenue, fisheries and agricultural officials are certifying the fertile lands as fallow lands by taking bribes and said it’s not correct to sanction permission to fish tanks by citing GO Nos.7 and 15 and demanded withdrawal of both GOs immediately. He pointed out that the officials have permitted fish ponds by ignoring the pleas of farmers.
The CPM secretary demanded cancellation of permissions given by district committee and not to give new permissions and also demanded dismantling of illegal fish ponds.
The meeting demanded the government to give permission to fish ponds only in barren lands, submerging Kolleru lands in district. The members also lamented that the government policy would pose a threat to food security.
They said that small and marginal farmers, tenant farmers and agriculture labour will lose their livelihood. They observed that illegal fish ponds are around one lakh acres according to official statements.
CPM warned that if government announces the fertile lands as aqua zone, the party will take up agitation. CPM State committee members Manthena Sitaram, R Satyanarayana Raju, district party secretariat members Juttiga Narasimha Murthy, Gudipati Narasimha Rao, J N V Gopalan, Kethagopalan, D N V D Prasad and Aratlakatla Ravi also spoke.
