Visakhapatnam: Public support and involvement is necessary to achieve the target of attaining Swachh Andhra Pradesh by 2019 as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission launched on October 2, 2014 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, felt Panchayat Raj Minister Ch Ayyanna Patrudu.

Addressing the inaugural function of a State-level workshop on ‘Steering Andhra Pradesh towards Open Defecation-Free (ODF) Status’ organised here on Tuesday, the Minister said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was very particular in transforming all 13,000 villages in the State into Smart and Model Villages for which public participation is necessary.
He said that 52 lakh people in the State have no individual toilets as of now and to attain the target, 13 lakh toilets are to be built every year.
He asked the sarpanches, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), officials and local public representatives to reach the rural and agency people and highlight the benefits of using individual sanitary latrines. Now the government will give Rs 15,000 for each toilet as against the earlier Rs 12,000, he added.
Patrudu further underscored the need for sensitising tribal people living in agency areas as their traditions and habits are totally different and unless with their involvement, 100 per cent target could not be reached.
He called upon the officials to learn the experiences of the officials came from Rajasthan, MP and Chhattisgarh States in going ahead to meet the target. Rural Development Minister Kimidi Mrunalini said that earlier people were hesitating to observe family planning and total literacy drive but now everybody is coming forward voluntarily to follow family planning and sending their wards to schools.
If the people in rural and agency areas realise that having individual toilets would increase their prestige, the goal of Swachh Andhra Pradesh could be reached by 2019, she opined.
ZP Chairperson Lalam Bhavani said since the inception of Swachh Bharat Mission last year, there had been improvement in the mindset of public who are increasingly opting for individual toilets.
