Tirupati: The four-day national level competition, ‘54th Akhila Bharatha Shastriya Spartha (ABSS)’, began here on Wednesday on a colourful note.

Speaking at the inaugural function, Sri Venkateswara Vedic University (SVVU) Vice-Chancellor Prof K E Devanathan said that the national-level competition will be held in 21 Sastras.
It is mainly aimed at encouraging students to study Sastras to improve their knowledge, he said, adding that about 500 students from 97 Sanskrit institutions spread over 23 States are participating in the national-level event.
The Rashtriya Sankrit Vidyapeetha (RSVP), New Delhi, has been organising the event annually. This time it had decided to hold the 54th national meet in collaboration with SVVU in Tirupati, he said.
The Vice-Chancellor said, the competitions include elocution in Vyakarana, Sahitya, Nyaya, Sankhya Yoga, Vedanta, Mimamsa, Dharma Shastra and Jyotishya. Apart from elocution, Salaka Pariksha, Kantha Patha Pariksha, Vedantakshari and Akshara Sloki etc will also be conducted. About 40 expert judges from across the country will judge the performance of the students.
Cash prizes inlcuding first prize Rs 10,000, second prize of Rs 7,000 and third prize Rs 5000. Gold, silver and bronze dollars respectively will also be presented to the students who secure the first three places. Those who score over 80% and 65% in Salaka will be given Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,500 respectively, he added.
Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Tirupati Vice-Chancellor Harekrishna Satapathy, RSVP Delhi Vyakarana Professor Lalithakumar and others spoke. Later, the students demonstrated their skill in Yoga leaving the audience spell bound.
