Eluru: The successful ‘108’ ambulance is getting its spinoff. ‘102’ – a new ambulance service will be introduced for the first time by GVK-EMRI to cater to the needs of pregnant and save infants. The Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will be launching the service, here on January 1.

Pregnant women in the State are facing lot of inconvenience, while getting admitted in the hospitals for delivery. They have to hire private vehicles or auto rickshaws to get them to the hospital. Taking these problems into consideration, the State government has decided to introduce another ambulance service exclusively for the pregnant women. The GVK - EMRI will take the operational responsibility of these ambulances, like 108 vehicles.

The Chief Minister will launch the 102 call centre from Eluru on Friday evening. He will also flag off the Talli-Bidda express. The Talli Bidda suraksha, a flagship programme under National Health Mission (NHM) and it envisages cashless deliveries including caesarean sections and sick newborn services (up to the age of one year) at certified, notified public health institutions, in both rural and urban areas, in the State. This scheme is aimed at mitigating the burden of out of pocket expense incurred, at public health institutions, on delivery and new born services for transportation, drugs, diagnostics, blood, diet and user charges for availing services.

The GVI - EMRI conducted interviews for pilots to the 102 ambulances and18 pilots are appointed so far. Likewise the appointment of staff is going on in other districts. The 102 ambulance service has been successfully running in Odisha, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

At present, the 108 ambulance service is extending the services to pregnant women to get admission in the hospital and safe return to their residence after delivery. However, the 108 service is attending various calls like road accidents and other serious cases too. This prompted the government to set up separate service exclusively for the pregnant. It has decided to set up the 102 ambulances to serve exclusively to pregnant and post-partum as part of National Health Mission.

As part of this, the government has taken up "mother and child drop back" programme in the state. As per this programme, the 102 ambulances will extend services to pregnant women in 7, 8, 9 months for visiting scanning, x-ray centres and others. In 9 and 10 months, the service will take the latter to the hospital for delivery. Like 108, the new 102 service will run at free of cost.

In West Godavari district, in the first phase, the 102 vehicles will run in the vicinity of area hospitals like Eluru, Tadepalligudem, Kovvuru, Bhimavaram and Tanuku. A call centre will set up soon at State capital to link up with 102 ambulances. In a phased manner, these services will be extended to cluster and Primary Health Centres.
