Hundreds of students took out a rally with placards to highlight the need for reading books on Monday.

The ‘Walk for Books’ was conducted by the Vijayawada Book Festival Society (VBFS) to mark the 27th Vijayawada Book Festival being conducted at Swarajya Maidhan.

Holding placards that inscribed slogans on benefits of book reading, the children began the walk from the Press Club in Gandhi Nagar, where it was flagged of by City Police Commissioner Gautham Sawang.

Speaking on the occasion, Gautham Sawang said that from two decades the book festival showcased in the city has been serving as knowledge hub with the display of historic books of Telugu literature authored by ancient poets. He called upon the students to develop the habit of pursuing the books of various genres written by eminent poets for acquiring knowledge, besides pursuing their regular academics.
The VBFS President Babjee and a few book lovers from the city, including GV Purnachand, Dr Indla Ramasubba Reddy, Pattabhiram, Dr Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad, Gumma Sambasiva Rao, Venna Vallabha Rao and G Samaram, walked along with the children.
Raising slogans on Telugu language and culture, the children proceeded through Eluru Road and Museum Road before heading towards the Swaraj Maidan, where the 27th Vijayawada Book Festival was being conducted. Book lovers and traders gave a warm welcome to the walkers by cheering lustily. A few traders distributed pamphlets of their firms to the participants of the walk.
