Visakhapatnam: Architecture, which is an ancient subject is now being considered as an important tool in urban planning particularly in the wake of Smart Cities, observed National President, Council of Architecture Prof Uday Gadkari.

Speaking at a programme organised by GITAM School of Architecture after inaugurating architecture exhibition organised by GITAM students said that there is a huge demand for architects in the country and there is only 80,000 registered architects in the country. “We are receiving 120 new proposals yearly from those willing to start architecture schools in the country in addition to the existing 421 schools”, he informed.

He said that Southern States are strong in architecture education and States like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have to add a few more schools to meet the demand. The Council of Architecture, he said, is requesting the government to amend the Acts to facilitate an architect to work, along with engineers, while planning the urban infrastructure. He advised the student community to take up research in this field to get global opportunities and appreciated GITAM School of Architecture students’ exhibits. GITAM president Dr MVVS Murthi felicitated Prof Gadkari and expressed that the council would give good directions to the country in transforming the Smart Cities. Vice-Chancellor Prof G Subrahmanyam, Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof D Harinarayana, registrar Prof M Potharaju, Indian Institute of Architecture (IIA) Visakha Chapter president SLN Sastry were present.
