With great scope for anti-social elements and attacks on them, a few enthusiastic women are learning the self-defence techniques while a few still remain unaware of the concept. Now, bringing this to the women from the lower strata is this Nirbhaya Free Karate Camp, run by a Japan Diploma certificate holder Ravi Babu Kodali.

The camp is underway at the Montessori Mahila Kalasala campus for an hour everyday till January 10. Ravi Babu, who is the first recipient of the Japan Diploma in Andhra Pradesh realised the need for self protection in women when Nirbhaya incident shocked the country, decided to empower them by teaching the art of self-defence.

He has been coaching women staff of the APSRTC at Zonal Training College in Gannavaram for two years now and works as an instructor of the martial art at city’s schools and colleges. This is the fourth consecutive camp for women. Speaking about this, Ravi says, “I was very touched by the Nirbhaya incident.

It was when I decided to contribute my services to the physically weaker section who are subjected to harassment. I started to offer free basic self defence courses to the interested. The first time when I conducted it in 2013, more than 100 middle-aged women, of working class participated in the camp. If basics were taught, they can manage to restrict the attack depending on the strike.”

He further added that learning self-defence is a requisite for all women and children to have control over the sudden accidents that might affect them. Learning martial arts not only equips them with tactics of attacks but also improves concentration and confidence.
